Traditional Japanese joinery has been around for centuries and is recognized for its extensive commitment to sustainable construction methodology for its long lifespan, nontoxicity, flexibility, durability, and use of natural material. It serves to connect, bringing different elements together (whether they are same or different material) and is a system of relationships inspired by the nature. Kigumi-dana, (joinery shelf in Japanese) is a wooden side table assembled purely with this Japanese joinery method, and is a furniture piece inspired by Kengo-Kuma’s philosophy of “material structure”: structures that let the materiality derive its form. The main structure has no adhesive substances, and can be easily disassembled and reassembled for easy transportation and construction. The ornamental wooden slabs on the drawer front is simply slotted in, and the drawer mechanism is constructed purely of wood. The side table is topped with a walnut slab, which is pierced through by the main wooden structure. A glass slab then sits on top, finishing the ensemble.
